Letter from the Secretary General
May 1, 2009
Dear Advisors and Delegates,
It is my distinct honor and privilege to formally invite you to the 58th annual session of Berkeley Model United Nations. The session will be held March 5th-7th, 2010 at the University of California, Berkeley campus.
Berkeley Model United Nations was founded in 1952 on the principles of political participation, diplomacy, and global awareness. Since then, our conference has established itself as the biggest on the West Coast, attracting over 1,500 delegates from all over the world each year. Through the years, BMUN has maintained a tradition of high quality debate, diversity, and diplomacy. It is my hope that the 58th session will continue that tradition.
While our conference prides itself on its fifty-eight years of tradition, we have also made several changes this year in response to your input and feedback.
- First, we will be reducing the size of committees, so students can have a more intimate experience in committee with their Head Chairs. This year, we will have 19 diverse committees, ranging from the traditional General Assembly and ECOSOC committees to specialized regional committees, including the Arab League and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations.
- Second, our Secretariat, comprised of UC Berkeley undergraduates, is dedicated to making BMUN a unique educational experience for students. They are striving to make creative changes to make committee more entertaining and interactive. This means more crisis-oriented committees to allow for a higher level of diplomacy and policy debate.
- Third, we will make committee blogs, video updates, and e-mail communication more frequent to allow for increased interaction with head chairs.
- Finally, we will be continuing our efforts at creating a waste-neutral conference. The Country Matrix has not been included to save paper, but will be posted online in June. We will also be making improvements to our paperless, online registration system.
Enclosed in this packet is a Conference Information sheet, a BMUN 58 Timeline, and the Scholarship Application. The materials include information on how to register, a list of committees, and information about our outreach program. You can always access these materials online at www.bmun.net as well.
As we continue into BMUN’s 58th year of existence, I invite you to join us at our conference for an exciting weekend of tradition, diplomacy, and debate. Please feel free to contact us if you have any questions or concerns.
Best,
Brian Huang
